Intense dark garnet with violet hues, and an intense, complex nose of classic Syrah notes such as black pepper, olives and black fruit. Good volume on the palate, with a texture that fills the mouth, fine tannins and a long finish.

Winemaking

Fruit from the Limarí Valley, where a strong maritime influence brings the Camanchaca fog in from the sea each morning; it lingers in the vineyards until the sun clears the Andes. Very low rainfall means technical irrigation is used, letting the vines root deep into mineral-rich soil and giving the wine a fresh, distinctly mineral character. Bunches were handpicked and selected, gently destemmed, and fermented in open vats with manual cap management for a gentle, complete extraction; fermentation temperature was held between 28–30°C, followed by a 21-day post-fermentation maceration. Aged 24 months in 15% new French oak barrels. Residual sugar 1.51 g/L, pH 3.78, acidity 5.15 g/L. Keep in a cool, dark place up to 20°C and avoid sudden temperature changes.

Founded in 1879 by Don Alberto Valdivieso, Valdivieso is a Chilean winery whose Winemaker's Reserva range draws on the Rapel and Curicó valleys, and whose icon Caballo Loco Grand Cru line sources single-vineyard fruit from Apalta (Colchagua), Limarí and the upper Maipo Valley. Its Extra Brut sparkling wine, made by the traditional bottle-fermented method, is sourced from the Biobío and Itata valleys.
