Finca Río Negro Gewürztraminer2024

Finca Río Negro · Vino de Pago Río Negro

Rich yellow with some green hues, clear and bright. An intense and exuberant nose with a complex bouquet of floral notes mixed with delicate fruit tones such as green apple, citrus and tropical fruit, with a spicy background. Dry, complex and fresh on the palate, with a creamy mid-palate and full mouthfeel; a long-lasting freshness lingers in the aftertaste.

Pairs with: Spiced Asian cooking, mild chicken curry and foie gras. Its floral, spiced notes suit aromatic dishes and gently sweet contrasts.

Winemaking

9.5 hectares of trellised vines on a single Cordon Royat system, planted in 2005, on limestone soil with a top layer of clay and stone pebbles, acidic and poor in nutrients; yield capped under 6,000 kg/hectare. Harvested September 7–8 in a fresh vintage with higher-than-usual rainfall (630 L). 50% of the grapes underwent 6 hours of cold maceration for aromatic extraction, the other 50% pressed directly; both juices fermented together in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation in tank and 4 months of lees ageing with weekly pump-overs. Alcohol 13.6%; pH 3.36; acidity 4.72 g/L tartaric acid; residual sugar 2.1 g/L. Production: 26,517 bottles.

About Finca Río Negro

Located in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), at the foothills of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park. In 1998 the Fuentes family founded Finca Río Negro, reviving a winemaking tradition wiped out by phylloxera in the 1920s. Since 2025 the estate holds Vino de Pago status, Spain's highest quality designation. At 1,000 meters above sea level, it is among the highest vineyards at this latitude in Europe, with the nearest neighboring vineyard 60 km away. The 44-hectare estate is divided into 36 plots of Tempranillo, Tinto Fragoso, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Gewürztraminer on old, nutrient-poor ‘raña’ soils over limestone. The vineyard and winery are certified organic by the European Union.
