Finca Río Negro 5º Año2020

Finca Río Negro · Vino de Pago Río Negro

Cherry red with violet-shaded rims and high color intensity. An intense, deep and complex bouquet with a prevalence of blackberries, balanced with some spice and smoky notes from the oak barrels as well as ripe, flinty notes. Silky, powerful and full-bodied on the palate, with good balance, a rich, creamy body, freshness and length.

Pairs with: Dry-aged rib steak, roast milk-fed lamb and oxtail. Its concentration, complexity and long aging deserve dishes of real gastronomic depth.

Winemaking

3.5 hectares, trellis-trained on a single Cordon Royat system, vines planted 1999–2005, yield capped at 4,200 kg/hectare, manually harvested in 18 kg crates. Soils with a limestone parent rock, clay top layer, stone pebbles, acidic pH and poor in nutrients. Harvested September 25 – October 18 in a year with 530 liters of rainfall and a fresh September that allowed slow ripening and high acidity. 16-day maceration followed by alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in large oak foudres (5,000–10,000 L), then aged 16 months in new French Allier oak barrels. Alcohol 14.9%; pH 3.71; acidity 5.1 g/L tartaric acid; residual sugar 2.0 g/L. Production: 18,721 bottles. Grapes: Tempranillo 70%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%. From its fifth year of elaboration on, this becomes the winery's flagship, limited-series ageing wine.

About Finca Río Negro

Located in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), at the foothills of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park. In 1998 the Fuentes family founded Finca Río Negro, reviving a winemaking tradition wiped out by phylloxera in the 1920s. Since 2025 the estate holds Vino de Pago status, Spain's highest quality designation. At 1,000 meters above sea level, it is among the highest vineyards at this latitude in Europe, with the nearest neighboring vineyard 60 km away. The 44-hectare estate is divided into 36 plots of Tempranillo, Tinto Fragoso, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Gewürztraminer on old, nutrient-poor ‘raña’ soils over limestone. The vineyard and winery are certified organic by the European Union.
