Finca Río Negro Cerro del Lobo2021

Finca Río Negro · Vino de Pago Río Negro

Clear and shiny, an intense cherry red with violet shades. An intense, deep and complex bouquet with a prevalence of black berries, violets, black olives, spices, vanilla, tobacco and balsamic notes. Good balance on the palate: full body, fresh, creamy and long-lasting.

Pairs with: Braised beef cheeks, roast lamb and duck magret with red berries. Its Syrah character of black fruit, spice and balsamic notes matches intensely flavored meats.

Winemaking

From the single vineyard ‘Cerro del Lobo’ (‘Hill of the Wolf’), named for the first sighting of a wolf on the estate eating grapes from this plot. Trellis-trained on a single Cordon Royat system, yield capped under 5,000 kg/hectare. Soils of clay and limestone with stone pebbles and acidic pH. Harvested October 3 following a year of abundant rainfall (691 L) and a cooler-than-usual September that allowed very slow ripening. 14-day maceration, fermented in stainless steel at 23°C, followed by malolactic fermentation, then aged 12 months in exclusively French oak barrels (225 L and 500 L, new and second-use, medium toast). Alcohol 14.5%; pH 3.69; acidity 5.3 g/L tartaric acid; residual sugar 2.2 g/L. Production: 16,781 bottles.

About Finca Río Negro

Located in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), at the foothills of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park. In 1998 the Fuentes family founded Finca Río Negro, reviving a winemaking tradition wiped out by phylloxera in the 1920s. Since 2025 the estate holds Vino de Pago status, Spain's highest quality designation. At 1,000 meters above sea level, it is among the highest vineyards at this latitude in Europe, with the nearest neighboring vineyard 60 km away. The 44-hectare estate is divided into 36 plots of Tempranillo, Tinto Fragoso, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Gewürztraminer on old, nutrient-poor ‘raña’ soils over limestone. The vineyard and winery are certified organic by the European Union.
