Finca Río Negro · Vino de Pago Río Negro

Clear and shiny. Cherry red with violet rims, medium intensity. An intense bouquet with red berries and violets subtly blended with notes of French and American oak. Good balance, medium body, very fresh and long-lasting on the palate.

Pairs with: Duck magret, Iberian pork tenderloin and mushroom risotto. Its red fruit, freshness and moderate oak make for versatile pairings with meat and mushrooms.

Winemaking

Grapes hand-selected from plots at 992 meters above sea level, trellis-trained on a single Cordon Royat system, yield capped under 5,500 kg/hectare, on limestone soils with a top layer of clay and stone pebbles, acidic and poor in nutrients. Harvested September 25 – October 10 following a year of short rainfall (480 L) and a cooler-than-usual second half of August and September that allowed slow ripening. 10-day skin maceration, followed by alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, then aged 7 months in medium-toast French oak barrels of 225 and 500 liters. pH 3.92; acidity 4.3 g/L tartaric acid; residual sugar 2.1 g/L. Production: 31,633 bottles.

About Finca Río Negro

Located in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), at the foothills of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park. In 1998 the Fuentes family founded Finca Río Negro, reviving a winemaking tradition wiped out by phylloxera in the 1920s. Since 2025 the estate holds Vino de Pago status, Spain's highest quality designation. At 1,000 meters above sea level, it is among the highest vineyards at this latitude in Europe, with the nearest neighboring vineyard 60 km away. The 44-hectare estate is divided into 36 plots of Tempranillo, Tinto Fragoso, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Gewürztraminer on old, nutrient-poor ‘raña’ soils over limestone. The vineyard and winery are certified organic by the European Union.
