Eder de Valdelana Roble

Valdelana · D.O.Ca. Rioja · Rioja Alavesa

Cardinal red with a purple rim; a showy, dazzling, well-covered robe. Very well-defined aromas, with hints of cherry blending into echoes of wild fruit and a dairy note that gives it depth. Powerful, joyful and lively on the palate: an attractive combination of freshness and maturity, bold and youthful, full of fruit. The ripe fruit is balanced by an acidity that keeps it fresh, with an adequate tannic structure and a powerful finish.

Pairs with: Grilled lamb chops, chorizo and young Manchego. Six months in French oak rounds the Tempranillo without burying the fruit, so it suits simple grilled meat and cured cheese.

Winemaking

Vineyard over 70 years old on calcareous clay soil, in a Mediterranean climate with hints of Continental and average annual rainfall of 650 litres. Hand-harvested in the second week of October into open 18–20 kg boxes, selected in the field from the family's oldest vines and from vines carrying fewer than four bunches. The fruit is held in cold storage at 5 °C overnight, then given a cold pre-fermentation maceration and a spontaneous fermentation. Tempranillo, which brings balance and smoothness with notes of red fruit and subtle spice. Held in French oak for a maximum of six months.

About Valdelana

The Valdelana family has grown grapes in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa) since the end of the 19th century, farming around 150 hectares of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, Viura and Malvasía at fairly low yields. Juan Jesús Valdelana, third generation of the family, is winemaker and manager; the estate produces wines exclusively from its own grapes to control quality from vineyard to bottle.
