Eder de Valdelana Crianza

Valdelana · D.O.Ca. Rioja · Rioja Alavesa

Intense cherry red, very deep and bright. It runs through a range in which balsamic notes embrace the vanilla that recalls its time in wood. Sober in the mouth, ample and powerful, with a marked character that shows itself on entry; tactile sensations of ripe fruit and tannins that make the passage silky and oily. A balsamic finish with fruit and wood perfectly blended. Tasty throughout, with tannins of great nobility and a deep, powerful aftertaste: pure velvet.

Pairs with: Roast lamb, oxtail and aged Manchego. The longer time in wood, French then Caucasian, gives the structure for slow-cooked meat and the depth to stand up to a strong cheese.

Winemaking

Vineyard over 70 years old on calcareous clay soil, in a Mediterranean climate with hints of Continental and average annual rainfall of 650 litres. Hand-harvested in the second week of October into open 18–20 kg boxes, selected in the field from the family's oldest vines and from vines carrying fewer than four bunches. The fruit is held in cold storage at 5 °C overnight, then given a cold pre-fermentation maceration and a spontaneous fermentation. Tempranillo, which brings balance and smoothness with notes of red fruit and subtle spice. Malolactic fermentation in French oak over six months, followed by a further six months in Caucasian oak.

About Valdelana

The Valdelana family has grown grapes in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa) since the end of the 19th century, farming around 150 hectares of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, Viura and Malvasía at fairly low yields. Juan Jesús Valdelana, third generation of the family, is winemaker and manager; the estate produces wines exclusively from its own grapes to control quality from vineyard to bottle.
