Winemaking
60% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, a variety rich in extract, though prone to coulure, and resistant to drought and to vineyard pests and diseases such as powdery mildew. Vineyard 28 years old on calcareous clay soil, Atlantic climate with Mediterranean influence part of the day, average rainfall 650 L/year. Cold-macerated for 8 hours to extract aromatic precursors and achieve the desired hue, with a saignée draw-off before fermentation begins under carefully controlled low temperatures. Serve cool, 6–8°C.
About Valdelana
The Valdelana family has grown grapes in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa) since the end of the 19th century, farming around 150 hectares of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, Viura and Malvasía at fairly low yields. Juan Jesús Valdelana, third generation of the family, is winemaker and manager; the estate produces wines exclusively from its own grapes to control quality from vineyard to bottle.
