Winemaking
A blend of full-bodied Ports of real character, aged for around two years in large wooden tonéis and balseiros in Barão de Vilar's ageing cellars. These wines soften and gain sophistication with age while keeping the strong, youthful presence of red and dark fruit and the intensity of color; blending gives a consistent, balanced wine year after year. Winemaker: Álvaro van Zeller.
About Barão de Vilar
Barão de Vilar – Vinhos SA was formed in January 1996, when Fernando Luís van Zeller passed a small stock of wine to his sons Fernando and Álvaro. The name revives a title granted in 1836 by Queen Maria II to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the first Baron of Vilar, which remains in the family. The van Zellers are one of the Douro's long-standing Port families and were the owners of Quinta do Noval before this house was founded; Álvaro van Zeller, who makes the wines, began his career there. The Ports are aged in the company's own cellars and blended for consistency from one year to the next.
